How to calculate your arcana from your birth date

To find your arcana by date of birth, split the birthday into four parts: month, day, the first two digits of the year, and the last two digits of the year. Add them as MM + DD + century + YY. If the first sum is three digits, treat the first two digits as one number and add the final digit. If the result is two digits, keep it as the Personality Card and reduce it again for the Soul Card. Once you know your arcana path, the chart below shows which Major Arcana cards it maps to.

Example: January 2, 2023 becomes 01 + 02 + 20 + 23 = 46. Then 4 + 6 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1, so the birth-card pair is 10/1: Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. If the calculation reaches 19, it is kept as the 19/10/1 trio: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune, and The Magician.

What is my arcana? Three traditions, one birthday

The phrase “my arcana” is used by three traditions that all start from a birthday and then calculate differently, so the same question has three different kinds of answer. This calculator gives all three at once, each labelled with the method that produced it, so you can set what you get here next to anything you have been told elsewhere.

Your arcana number (birth-date digit sum). Add every digit of your birth date and reduce until the total is 22 or less. The result is one Major Arcana card in Rider–Waite numbering, where 8 is Strength, 11 is Justice, and 22 stands for The Fool. This is one common meaning of the plain “my arcana” question; the wording alone does not say which tradition someone has in mind. Four numbers have their own pages covering which birthdays produce them under each method: arcana 1, arcana 10, arcana 19 and arcana 22.

Your tarot birth cards (Greer method). Add month + day + century + the last two digits of the year, then reduce. Two-digit totals stay as a pair, a Personality Card and a Soul Card such as 10/1, and the 19 path keeps three cards. This is the version you will see called birth cards, soul card, or personality card.

Your Destiny Matrix arcana (Ladini, Marseille numbering). Instead of one number, the birthday is split into day, month, and year positions and combined into a sum and a center. The center is what Matrix readers call the central arcana; the day position is usually what they label the personal arcana. Numbers here follow the Marseille order, where 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength.

None of the three overrules the others. They answer different questions with different arithmetic, and a birthday that lands on 5 in one can land on 14 or 10 in another without anyone having made a mistake. Central arcana and personal arcana (Destiny Matrix)

The Matrix of Destiny, also written Destiny Matrix and widely shared on short-video apps, does not give you a single arcana. It gives you a small chart of positions, each a Major Arcana number from 1 to 22. Five of them come straight from the birthday:

• Day position: the day of the month, reduced to 22 or less. Most Matrix readers label this the personal arcana position.
• Month position: the calendar month, never reduced. December stays 12.
• Year position: the digits of the birth year added together and reduced.
• Sum: day + month + year positions, reduced. Many charts read this as the core.
• Center: all four of the above added and reduced. This is the central arcana, commonly interpreted as the “comfort zone” position.

Worked example for 14 July 1991: day 14, month 7, year 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 20, sum 14 + 7 + 20 = 41 → 4 + 1 = 5, center 14 + 7 + 20 + 5 = 46 → 4 + 6 = 10. So the central arcana is 10, Wheel of Fortune, and the personal arcana is 14, Temperance. Reduction stops at 22, so a 22 stays The Fool instead of collapsing to 4.

Because the Matrix uses the Marseille ordering, 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength there, the opposite of the Rider–Waite deck used by the arcana number and the birth cards above. Your arcana for 2026

“Does my arcana change every year?” Your birth arcana does not; it is fixed by your birth date. What changes is your year card, and the two traditions on this page compute it differently, so treat them as two separate answers rather than one.

Greer year card. Take month + day + the century + the last two digits of the target year, and reduce the same way as the birth cards. For someone born on 14 July, the 2026 year card is 13, Death. The Greer year runs birthday to birthday, so until your birthday in 2026 you are still on the previous year’s card. Your result shows the Greer year card for the year it is labelled with.

Matrix personal year. Add your day and month positions to the reduced digit sum of the target year, then reduce again. For the same 14 July birthday, the 2026 personal year position is 4, Emperor in Marseille numbering. Many Matrix sites also publish age-based yearly forecasts that are not this calculation, which is why two Matrix apps can disagree about your 2026 card as well. For a one-off question about the year ahead, a single-card draw answers something different again: the moment, not the cycle.

Why different arcana calculators can give different results

Different birth-card calculators can hand you different cards from the same birthday, and none of them is simply broken. Three things drive it. First, the arithmetic: some tools add up every single digit of your birth date, while others add the full four-digit year, the month, and the day as whole numbers — both are long-standing methods, and the two answers always differ by a multiple of nine. Second, where the counting stops: some tools reduce all the way down to a single digit, and others stop as soon as the total is 22 or less, which is why a 12 for one calculator can be a 3 for another. Third, the deck itself: the Rider–Waite tradition numbers Strength as 8 and Justice as 11, while the older Marseille tradition swaps them — same card meanings, different house numbers. We name the tradition next to every number on this page, so you can always tell which system produced your card and compare it fairly with anything else you have been given.
