Arcana 17 is The Star in every tarot numbering, a kneeling figure pouring water under one large star and seven small ones. As a birth arcana it is met most often through the Greer 17/8 pair, which about 11% of birthdays receive, and through the Destiny Matrix day slot for anyone born on the 17th. What this page adds concerns how the Greer pair is reached. When a Greer total is reduced by hand, the working stops either at 17 or at 8. In the first case The Star is already there; in the second it is added by the Greer rule that puts N + 9 in front of a single-digit result. For births from 1930 to 1999, about four in five 17/8 pairs stop at 17. For births from 2000 to 2015 none do: every one of them stops at 8, and The Star arrives only through the rule.

Anyone born on the 17th has arcana 17 as a day position, roughly one date in thirty, and the year slot shows 17 for just five birth years between 1930 and 2015: 1934, 1943, 1952, 1961 and 1970. On the digit sum, 17 appears only when a date's digits add to exactly 17. From 1930 to 1999 that happens on 50 dates, all of them in 1930, 1931, 1932, 1940, 1941 or 1950, such as 1 February 1940 (1 + 9 + 4 + 0 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 1). For births from 2000 to 2015 the share is about 7.9%, as with 7 July 2010 (2 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 0 + 7 + 0 + 7). The Greer pair is steady at about 11% in both periods, but the working behind it changes. Greer adds month, day, century and the year's last two digits as whole numbers. For birthdays from 1930 to 1999 those totals run from 51 to 161, and the 17/8 group takes in 53, 62, 71 and 80, which reduce to 8, as well as 89, 98 and every ninth total from 107 to 161, which reduce to 17. 15 April 1987 is one of the second kind (4 + 15 + 19 + 87 = 125, then 12 + 5 = 17). Of the 2,840 birthdays from 1930 to 1999 with 17/8, 2,277 stop at 17 this way and 563 stop at 8. From 2000 to 2015 the century term is 20 and the largest possible total is 78, so a total of 89 or more never occurs, and all 650 of that period's 17/8 birthdays stop at 8. 1 January 2004 is typical: 1 + 1 + 20 + 4 = 26, then 2 + 6 = 8, and 8 + 9 puts 17 in front.

The Greer year card repeats the same split. A year card for 2026 uses the century 20 and the year 26, so with your month and day the total runs from 48 to 89. A Star-fronted year needs a total that reduces to 8 or to 17, and 41 birthdays get one in 2026, but only 31 December reaches 17 directly, through a total of 89 (12 + 31 + 20 + 26); the other 40 reach 8 first. As the year term grows, more birthdays arrive at 17 directly: one in 2027, three in each of 2028 and 2029, and eleven of the 41 in 2035.
