Arcana 15 as your personal arcana
15 is The Devil in both the Rider–Waite and the Marseille numbering. The card meaning itself lives on the tarot card page for The Devil; this page is about the number as a birth arcana.

Arcana 15 is The Devil in every tarot numbering, two figures chained loosely to a block they could step away from. As a birth arcana it reaches about one date in nine through the Greer 15/6 pair and about one in thirty through the Destiny Matrix day slot, the 15th. This page is mostly about a quieter disagreement. A Destiny Matrix chart and a birth-date digit sum both add up the whole date, in different ways, and for birthdays from 1930 to 1999 the Matrix sum came out at 15 on 254 dates while the digit sum did so on four. For every date from 1000 to 2099 they differ by a multiple of nine, so whenever a Matrix chart shows The Devil as its sum, the digit sum is 15 or 6 and the Greer cards are 15/6.

| Method | Birthdays | How it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Personal arcana (day position)Matrix of Destiny (Ladini), as commonly published | 3.3% | Born on the 15th of any month. |
| Arcana number (digit sum)Birth-date digit sum, RWS numbering | 1.6% | All eight digits of the date total 15. For example 1 January 1930, 25 November 2004 and 28 January 2011. |
| Tarot birth cardsGreer method | 11% | Appears in the 15/6 path. For example 1 January 1930, 1 September 1958 and 12 May 1987. |

Being born on the 15th is the one way to hold arcana 15 as a day position (3.3% of dates), and among birth years 1930–2015 only 1932, 1941 and 1950 put 15 in the year slot. A digit-sum 15 requires a date whose eight digits sum to precisely 15, and between 1930 and 1999 just four dates do that, all in 1930 (see the FAQ); 1 January 1930 is the first (1 + 9 + 3 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 1). From 2000 to 2015 the share jumps to about 8.3%, with 25 November 2004 a typical case (2 + 0 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 5). The Matrix sum reduces the day and the year before adding them to the month, so a 1986 birthday contributes 6 for its year where the digit sum counts all 24, and a Matrix sum of 15 stays within reach through the 1900s: 1.0% of dates from 1930 to 1999 and 3.6% from 2000 to 2015. 24 March 1986 shows the split. Its day slot is 6 (2 + 4), its month 3 and its year slot 6 (1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24, then 2 + 4), so the Matrix sum is 15, The Devil. Its digits total 33, which the digit sum reduces to 6, The Lovers. Greer adds 3 + 24 + 19 + 86 = 132 and reduces it to 13 + 2 = 15, so the birth cards are 15/6 and hold both. Of the 254 Matrix-sum Devils born from 1930 to 1999, 253 have a digit-sum 6 like this one; the exception is 1 January 1930, where both sums are 15. The Greer pair 15/6 covers about 11% of dates in either period.
Arcana 15 as your personal arcana (Destiny Matrix day position)
Matrix readers take a day-slot arcana 15 as the card of attachment and appetite: the pull of what a person wants, and the bargains struck to keep it. Readers lean on the loose chains, treating the day slot as a place where someone can see plainly what holds them and could lift it off. Readers who read the day slot as a person's public manner describe a 15 there as intense and frank about desire, at ease naming what others pretend not to want. The cost readers name is the bargain kept past its use: staying with an arrangement because leaving would mean admitting what it took. Matrix readers interpret a sum of 15 as the theme of the first three positions taken together, not as a second day slot. No date between 1000 and 2099 puts The Devil at the center, so there is no center reading for 15 to give.
Arcana 15 as your arcana number (birth-date digit sum)
Readers take a digit-sum arcana 15 as The Devil spread across a whole date: what you are bound to, and how much of the binding you chose. Readers credit it with honesty about desire and warn of the familiar trap, mistaking a habit for a need. The mismatch with the Matrix shows up here from the other side. Of the 488 dates from 1930 to 2015 whose digits total 15, only 194 also have a Matrix sum of 15; the other 294 have a Matrix sum of 6, The Lovers, because the chart folds the day and the year before adding. For dates from 1000 to 2099 the eight digits never total more than 48, and every total from 23 to 48 reduces to 12 or less; the digit sum therefore never folds a larger total down to 15. Readers who hold both results tend to ask one question of them: which tie in your life is there by choice, and which by habit?

Greer puts arcana 15 in front, in the 15/6 pair: The Devil over The Lovers, because 1 + 5 = 6. In Greer's terms the front card describes the visible pattern and the card behind it the motive. Read from the Devil's side, readers say the pair describes someone whose daily life is shaped by strong ties, and whose deeper question, the Lovers question, is which of those ties were chosen. The same date can show the two cards as two different arcana numbers, as 24 March 1986 does with a Matrix sum of 15 and a digit sum of 6, and readers who work across methods treat that as the pair turning up twice, not as a contradiction. People tend to worry about the front card, but 15/6 is plain arithmetic that roughly one birthday in nine receives, and in the tradition the Devil in front names a pattern, not an outcome.
Arcana 15 as a year arcana in 2026
- Destiny Matrix personal year 2026: 5 of the 366 possible birthdays land on 15, for example anyone born on 4 January, 31 January and 3 February.
- Greer year card for 2026 (first card of the year pair): 42 of the 366 possible birthdays produce 15 as the first card, for example 4 January, 28 April and 14 September; the year runs from your 2026 birthday to your 2027 birthday.
For a Matrix personal year of 15, day position plus month plus the year's reduced digits has to land on 15 exactly, because none of the larger totals this calculation can produce folds back to it. So it is scarce in the late 2020s: five birthdays in 2026 and one in 2029 (1 January, since that year contributes 13), then fifteen in 2030 when the year's contribution drops to 5. The Greer year card is far more generous: from 39 to 42 birthdays get a year written 15/6 in every year through 2035, and a rising number of them reach 15 directly instead of through a 6, from 26 of the 42 in 2026 to 38 of the 42 in 2035. Readers treat a Devil year as a time to look at an arrangement that has quietly hardened; nothing in the counts predicts how the year goes.
How to check your own number
- For the personal arcana, take the day of the month you were born. If it is above 22, add its digits (28 → 2 + 8 = 10).
- For the arcana number, add every digit of the full date, then keep adding the digits of the total until it is 22 or less. Stop at 22 — do not fold it to 4.
- For the birth cards, add month + day + the first two digits of the year + the last two digits, then reduce the Greer way; the free calculator shows the working for all three.
If two calculators disagree, the difference is almost always the stopping rule (22 versus a single digit) or the starting sum (digit by digit versus year + month + day as whole numbers). The calculator page explains both, and all 22 Major Arcana are listed on the tarot card meanings guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
- My Destiny Matrix sum is 15 but my arcana number is 6. Which one is right?
- Both, because they are different sums. The Matrix sum reduces your day and your birth year before adding the month, while the digit sum adds every digit of the date and reduces once at the end. Checked across all dates from 1000 to 2099, the two results always differ by a multiple of nine, so a Matrix sum of 15 comes with a digit sum of 15 or 6, and with the Greer cards 15/6, which contain both numbers.
- Why does almost nobody born from 1930 to 1999 have a digit-sum arcana 15?
- Only four dates in that span have it, all in 1930: 1 January, 10 January, 1 October and 10 October. A digit-sum 15 needs the eight digits to total exactly 15, and a year from 1930 to 1999 already contributes at least 13 on its own. From 2000 to 2015 a year contributes between 2 and 11, and the share rises to about 8.3%.
- Is The Devil a bad card to have as a birth arcana?
- Not in the way the name suggests. In birth-arcana readings The Devil stands for attachment and appetite, the things a person feels bound to, and the card's own image shows chains loose enough to remove. Readers use it as a prompt to look at what holds you, not as a prediction.
