Arcana 18 as your personal arcana
18 is The Moon in both the Rider–Waite and the Marseille numbering. The card meaning itself lives on the tarot card page for The Moon; this page is about the number as a birth arcana.

Arcana 18 is The Moon in every tarot numbering: a path running between two towers under the moon, a dog and a wolf on either side, and a crayfish climbing out of a pool. A birthday can meet it in six places across the three methods this site uses. Four are on a Destiny Matrix chart (the day slot, the year slot, the sum and the center), one is the birth-date digit sum, and one is the Greer 18/9 pair, where The Moon is always the front card. About 20% of dates from 1930 to 2015 have The Moon in at least one of those places. Far fewer have it twice, and none has it more than three times, because several of the places rule each other out. This page counts which combinations actually happen and explains why the others cannot.

Arcana 18 in the day slot needs a birthday on the 18th, true of 3.3% of dates. Six birth years in 1930–2015 put 18 in the year slot: 1935, 1944, 1953, 1962, 1971 and 1980. The digit sum gives The Moon only to dates whose digits come to 18 exactly, as on 4 January 1930 (1 + 9 + 3 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 0 + 4) and 18 January 2006 (2 + 0 + 0 + 6 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 8). From 1930 to 1999 only 105 dates manage it, none of them after 1960, because from 1961 to 1999 the year digits alone total 17 or more; from 2000 to 2015 it covers about 7.3% of dates. The Matrix sum is 18 for about 2.2% of dates, and the center for 86 dates in all, 0.3%, since a Moon center requires a position total of exactly 9. Now the overlaps. A day position of 18, plus at least 1 for the month and 1 for the year, already makes 20, and no total of 20 or more ends at 18 on this chart, so a day-slot Moon never shares a chart with a Moon in the sum or the center. A year-slot 18 rules out the sum and the center for the same reason, and it rules out a digit sum of 18 as well, because those year digits already total 18 before the month and day are added. Finally, a Moon in the Matrix sum, the center or the digit sum always comes with the Greer pair 18/9 for dates from 1000 to 2099, because each of those totals and the Greer total differ by a multiple of nine. Counting places, 4.7% of dates from 1930 to 2015 carry The Moon in two or more of them, and 254 dates carry it in three.
Arcana 18 as your personal arcana (Destiny Matrix day position)
Matrix readers take a day-slot arcana 18 as the card of half-light: perception that works best when things are unclear, a strong imagination, and an ear for what is not being said. Readers for whom the day slot is the first face a person shows describe an 18 there as receptive and hard to read, someone who picks up a mood quickly and keeps their own counsel. The caution readers attach is that imagination fills gaps with guesses, and a guess repeated often enough starts to feel like knowledge. A Moon at the center needs the first three positions to total exactly 9; the rarity comes from the arithmetic and adds no weight on this page.
Arcana 18 as your arcana number (birth-date digit sum)
A digit-sum Moon never comes alone. Each of the 533 dates in 1930–2015 with a digit total of 18 also has the Greer cards 18/9, so it already carries The Moon in two places; 229 add a Matrix sum of 18 and 19 add a birthday on the 18th, which makes 248 of them three-place Moons. Readers take a digit-sum 18 as a life theme of working without full information: acting while some things stay unclear, and telling an intuition apart from a fear. Readers count sensitivity to atmosphere as its gift and letting an imagined outcome steer a real decision as its risk. The check readers suggest is to ask someone you trust how a situation you keep rereading looks from the outside. Two facts close the count: about four in five of those 533 dates fall from 2000 onward, and on this site the digit sum leaves 18 as The Moon rather than folding it to 9.

Open the arcana calculatorArcana 18 in the Greer birth cards
In the Greer method arcana 18 is always the front card, in the pair 18/9: The Moon over The Hermit, since 1 + 8 = 9. The pair covers about 11% of birthdays, and three of the other five places bring it with them: every date with The Moon as its Matrix sum, center or digit sum has these Greer cards, while a day-slot or year-slot Moon may or may not. In Greer's terms The Moon is the personality card and The Hermit the soul card, and readers describe the pair as a changeable, intuitive outward manner over a solitary search for what is true. Readers sometimes notice that a birthday carries the two cards in mirrored places. 18 September 1935 has The Moon in its day slot, its year slot and its Greer front card, and The Hermit as its Matrix sum, its center and its digit sum. In the tradition a mirror like that is a theme to reflect on, not a sign.
Arcana 18 as a year arcana in 2026
- Destiny Matrix personal year 2026: 11 of the 366 possible birthdays land on 18, for example anyone born on 7 January, 24 February and 4 April.
- Greer year card for 2026 (first card of the year pair): 39 of the 366 possible birthdays produce 18 as the first card, for example 7 January, 12 May and 27 August; the year runs from your 2026 birthday to your 2027 birthday.
As a year arcana The Moon peaks on the Matrix side at the turn of the decade. The personal year is an exact sum here too, with day position, month and reduced year needing to come to 18, so the count follows the year's digits: 11 birthdays in 2026, 5 in 2029, then 20 in both 2030 and 2031 before easing back to 11 in 2035. The two year methods also agree for The Moon. In every year from 2026 to 2035, each birthday with a Matrix personal year of 18 also has a Greer year card written 18/9 for that year, because the two year totals differ by a multiple of nine. Bear in mind that the Matrix year follows the calendar while the Greer year changes on your birthday. Readers treat a Moon year as one for patience with uncertainty; neither count says anything about events.
How to check your own number
- For the personal arcana, take the day of the month you were born. If it is above 22, add its digits (28 → 2 + 8 = 10).
- For the arcana number, add every digit of the full date, then keep adding the digits of the total until it is 22 or less. Stop at 22 — do not fold it to 4.
- For the birth cards, add month + day + the first two digits of the year + the last two digits, then reduce the Greer way; the free calculator shows the working for all three.
If two calculators disagree, the difference is almost always the stopping rule (22 versus a single digit) or the starting sum (digit by digit versus year + month + day as whole numbers). The calculator page explains both, and all 22 Major Arcana are listed on the tarot card meanings guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can one birthday have The Moon in more than one place?
- Yes, though rarely more than twice. Among dates from 1930 to 2015, 4.7% carry The Moon in at least two of the six places counted on this page, and 254 of them in three, such as 4 January 1930: Matrix sum 18, digit sum 18 and Greer 18/9. No date from 1000 to 2099 has it in four places, because the day slot and the year slot each rule out several of the others, and the sum and the center rule out each other.
- Why does a Destiny Matrix sum of 18 come with the Greer cards 18/9?
- Both are built from the same date, and for every date from 1000 to 2099 the Matrix sum, the digit sum and the Greer total differ from one another by a multiple of nine. A Matrix sum of 18 therefore pairs with a Greer total that divides by nine, and Greer writes every such total as 18/9. The same holds for a Moon at the center, which needs the first three positions to total 9.
- Which birth years put The Moon in the year slot of a Destiny Matrix chart?
- From 1930 to 2015, only 1935, 1944, 1953, 1962, 1971 and 1980, the years in that span whose four digits add up to 18; from 1981 to 2015 the year slot never reads 18. About 7% of dates from 1930 to 2015 have a year-slot Moon.
