1994 Chinese Zodiac: The Wood Dog (Jia Xu 甲戌)
Born in 1994 · Year of the Dog · Wood Dog, Jia Xu 甲戌
The 1994 Chinese zodiac animal is the Dog, and the full name of the year is the Wood Dog, written Jia Xu (甲戌) in the 60-year stem-and-branch calendar. By the popular Chinese New Year convention, the 1994 Dog year runs from February 10, 1994 to January 30, 1995. By the solar convention used in BaZi (Four Pillars) astrology, it starts earlier, at Lichun on February 4, 1994, 09:31 Beijing time — the evening of February 3 in the United States — and lasts until Lichun on February 4, 1995.
So most people born in 1994 are Wood Dogs, but not everyone: a January 1994 birthday belongs to the Rooster, and a few days at each end of the year depend on which convention you use. This page covers what the 1994 Chinese zodiac sign is, how to check a birthday near the boundary, what the Wood Dog means in Chinese culture, and what a zodiac sign cannot tell you about one person. It is about the birth year itself, not a yearly horoscope — for that, see the 1994 Dog forecast for 2026.

When Did the 1994 Year of the Dog Start?
Two start dates for the same year sound like a contradiction, but they come from two different calendars and answer two different questions.
- Chinese New Year (lunar calendar): February 10, 1994. The festival date follows the new moon, so it moves between late January and late February. This is the date most families, horoscope columns and restaurant placemats use. By this reckoning the 1994 Dog year ended on January 30, 1995, the eve of the 1995 New Year.
- Lichun, the Start of Spring (solar calendar): February 4, 1994, 09:31 Beijing time. Lichun is the moment the sun reaches 315° of ecliptic longitude, so it falls on February 3, 4 or 5 every year. A BaZi chart changes its year pillar at this instant, not at New Year. In the solar-term tables our charts use, the 1994 Lichun is 09:30:56 and the 1995 Lichun is 15:12:51, both Beijing time.
Lichun is a single moment worldwide, so its clock time depends on where you were born:
| Time zone | Lichun 1994 |
|---|---|
| Beijing (UTC+8) | February 4, 09:31 |
| London (GMT, UTC+0) | February 4, 01:31 |
| US Eastern (EST, UTC−5) | February 3, 8:31 pm |
| US Pacific (PST, UTC−8) | February 3, 5:31 pm |
Born in Early 1994 or Early 1995? Check Your Sign
Most 1994 birthdays need no checking. The ones that do sit at the two edges of the year. Use the birth moment in Beijing time, or convert your local birth time using the table above:
| Birth moment (Beijing time) | Chinese New Year sign | BaZi year pillar |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 1 – Feb 4, 1994, before 09:31 | Rooster | 癸酉 Water Rooster |
| Feb 4, 1994, 09:31 – Feb 9, 1994 | Rooster | 甲戌 Wood Dog |
| Feb 10, 1994 – Jan 30, 1995 | Dog | 甲戌 Wood Dog |
| Jan 31, 1995 – Feb 4, 1995, before 15:13 | Pig | 甲戌 Wood Dog |
| Feb 4, 1995, 15:13 onward | Pig | 乙亥 Wood Pig |
Three things follow. A baby born in January 1994 is a Rooster by both conventions; the Dog year had not started. Someone born from the Lichun moment on February 4, 1994 (09:31 Beijing time) through February 9 is a Rooster by the festival calendar but already a Wood Dog in a BaZi chart; a birth earlier on February 4 is still a Water Rooster (癸酉) in the chart. And at the far end, someone born between January 31 and the afternoon of February 4, 1995 celebrates as a Pig yet still has 甲戌 as the year pillar of their chart — the 1994 Chinese zodiac reaches a few days into 1995 for chart purposes.
In the US the first boundary falls on the evening of February 3, 1994, so a February 3 birthday in New York after 8:31 pm already has a Wood Dog year pillar. If you were born on a boundary day and do not know your birth time, the date alone cannot settle the year pillar. Calculate Your ChartWhat Does the Wood Dog Mean? The 1994 Element Explained
Every year in the sexagenary calendar pairs one of ten Heavenly Stems with one of twelve Earthly Branches. In 1994 the stem is Jia (甲), Yang Wood, the image of a tall tree growing straight up. The branch is Xu (戌), the Dog, whose main element is Yang Earth: dry, late-autumn soil after the harvest has been brought in. "Wood Dog" is the popular label taken from the stem. Read more about the ten Heavenly Stems and the twelve Earthly Branches if the terms are new.
In the five-element cycle, wood restrains earth, so in 甲戌 the stem presses on the branch beneath it — roots working into hard ground. Classical commentary reads the pairing as growth that has to push for its room rather than receive it. Xu also stores three hidden stems, Wu (Yang Earth), Xin (Yin Metal) and Ding (Yin Fire), which is one reason BaZi readers treat the Dog branch as a mixed, layered character rather than "just earth". The Na Yin, or sound element, of 甲戌 is Mountain-top Fire, a separate traditional label for the stem-branch pair that some readers use for compatibility.
The Dog repeats every twelve years, but the element changes each time, so a Jia Xu year returns only every sixty years: 1934, 1994 and next in 2054. That is why someone born in 1982 (Water Dog) or 2006 (Fire Dog) shares your animal but not your year pillar.
| Year | Name | Dog year by Chinese New Year |
|---|---|---|
| 1934 | Wood Dog, Jia Xu 甲戌 | Feb 14, 1934 – Feb 3, 1935 |
| 1946 | Fire Dog, Bing Xu 丙戌 | Feb 2, 1946 – Jan 21, 1947 |
| 1958 | Earth Dog, Wu Xu 戊戌 | Feb 18, 1958 – Feb 7, 1959 |
| 1970 | Metal Dog, Geng Xu 庚戌 | Feb 6, 1970 – Jan 26, 1971 |
| 1982 | Water Dog, Ren Xu 壬戌 | Jan 25, 1982 – Feb 12, 1983 |
| 1994 | Wood Dog, Jia Xu 甲戌 | Feb 10, 1994 – Jan 30, 1995 |
| 2006 | Fire Dog, Bing Xu 丙戌 | Jan 29, 2006 – Feb 17, 2007 |
| 2018 | Earth Dog, Wu Xu 戊戌 | Feb 16, 2018 – Feb 4, 2019 |
In each of these years Lichun fell on February 4, Beijing time. When the New Year comes first, as in 1982 and 2006, the contested days run the other way: a person born in late January of those years is a Dog at the festival but still a Rooster in the chart.
The Dog in Chinese Culture
The Dog is the eleventh of the twelve zodiac animals, after the Rooster and before the Pig. In one popular telling of the Great Race legend it arrived late because it stopped to play in the river, which is why it ranks near the end despite being a strong swimmer. The Dog branch Xu also marks the two-hour period from 7 to 9 pm, when a household settles for the night and, in the usual folk explanation, the dog takes up its watch, and a solar month running from about early October to early November.
The traditional associations are loyalty, protection and a strong sense of fairness: the guard at the gate who knows exactly who belongs inside. In Mandarin a dog's bark is written wāng wāng (汪汪), which sounds close to 旺 wàng, "thriving", so Dog years bring a round of New Year puns about prosperity. Among the five Dogs, traditional commentary describes the Wood Dog as the most sociable and cooperative — the growth image of wood softening the Dog's guardedness — and you can read the broader character profile on the Dog zodiac page.
Classical branch relationships give the Dog a trine with the Tiger and Horse (寅午戌), a six-harmony pairing with the Rabbit (卯戌), and a clash with the Dragon (辰戌). These are relationships between year branches, not verdicts about people; the Dog compatibility guide explains how they are read and why two full charts often say something different.
Same Birth Year, Different Charts
The 1994 Chinese zodiac sign is the same for everyone born between the two Lichun moments. A BaZi chart has eight characters, and the year pillar supplies only two of them. The month pillar follows the season, the day pillar cycles every sixty days, and the hour pillar changes every two hours. The Day Master — the stem of the day pillar, which classical BaZi treats as the self — is not part of the year at all.
The five charts below are fictional teaching examples, calculated with the same engine as our calculator, using Beijing clock time to keep the boundary simple:
| Fictional birth (Beijing time) | Four pillars: year · month · day · hour | Day Master |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 4, 1994, 08:00 | 癸酉 · 乙丑 · 辛酉 · 壬辰 | Xin 辛, Yin Metal |
| Feb 4, 1994, 10:00 | 甲戌 · 丙寅 · 辛酉 · 癸巳 | Xin 辛, Yin Metal |
| Mar 15, 1994, 10:00 | 甲戌 · 丁卯 · 庚子 · 辛巳 | Geng 庚, Yang Metal |
| Jul 8, 1994, 14:00 | 甲戌 · 辛未 · 乙未 · 癸未 | Yi 乙, Yin Wood |
| Feb 2, 1995, 12:00 | 甲戌 · 丁丑 · 甲子 · 庚午 | Jia 甲, Yang Wood |
The first two births are two hours apart on the same day, yet one has a Water Rooster year and the other a Wood Dog year, and their month pillars differ too, because Lichun also opens the first solar month. The March and July births share 甲戌 but have different Day Masters, one metal and one wood, which a BaZi reader would treat as a more basic difference than anything the zodiac sign describes. The last birth is a Pig at New Year and a Wood Dog in the chart. To see which of these patterns is yours, use the free BaZi calculator; the Day Master guide explains what the day stem means.
What the 1994 Chinese Zodiac Sign Cannot Tell You
A zodiac sign is a shared label for a whole birth year. It is useful for festivals, family conversations and a first look at the classical symbolism, and it is a reasonable answer to "what is my Chinese zodiac?" It is not a personal reading. It cannot separate two people born in the same year, it says nothing about the season or hour you were born in, and the traits attached to the Dog are cultural associations rather than measured facts about people born in Dog years.
The annual pillar entry explains what the year pillar does represent in a chart. If you want the full picture, start with your own four pillars: the calculator is free, and if you later want the whole chart written up in depth, the Book of Fate is a one-time purchase you can preview first in the Book of Fate sample. For the year ahead rather than the year you were born, the 2027 Chinese zodiac fact sheet covers the Fire Goat year and its own Lichun boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What Chinese zodiac is 1994?
- The 1994 Chinese zodiac is the Dog — specifically the Wood Dog, Jia Xu (甲戌). By the Chinese New Year convention it runs from February 10, 1994 to January 30, 1995. In BaZi astrology the year pillar changes at Lichun, February 4, 1994 at 09:31 Beijing time, which was the evening of February 3 in the United States.
- What element is a 1994 Dog?
- Wood. The 1994 stem Jia (甲) is Yang Wood and the branch Xu (戌) is the Dog, whose main element is Yang Earth, so the year is called the Wood Dog. The previous Wood Dog year was 1934 and the next is 2054.
- Is the 1994 Chinese zodiac a Wood Dog or an Earth Dog?
- A Wood Dog. The Dog's own branch element is earth, which is why some zodiac charts list the Dog as an earth sign, but each Dog year takes its popular element name from the year's stem. In 1994 that stem is Jia, Yang Wood. The Earth Dog years nearest to 1994 are 1958 and 2018.
- I was born in January 1994. Am I a Dog?
- No. A January 1994 birth is a Rooster by both conventions: Chinese New Year came on February 10, 1994, and Lichun on February 4, 1994. In a BaZi chart the year pillar is 癸酉, the Water Rooster.
- Am I a Rooster or a Dog if I was born February 4–9, 1994?
- By the popular Chinese New Year convention you are a Rooster, because the Dog year began on February 10. In a BaZi chart you are a Wood Dog if you were born at or after Lichun, February 4 at 09:31 Beijing time; a birth earlier that morning is still 癸酉, the Water Rooster. For chart-based purposes use the BaZi answer and let a calculator compare your exact birth time.
- I was born in early February 1995. Am I a Dog or a Pig?
- The 1995 Chinese New Year fell on January 31, so a birth from that day on is a Pig by the festival convention. A BaZi chart keeps the 甲戌 Wood Dog year pillar until Lichun on February 4, 1995 at 15:13 Beijing time, so births from January 31 to that moment are Pigs at New Year and Wood Dogs in the chart.
- Does being a 1994 Wood Dog describe my personality?
- Only in a very general, cultural sense. Everyone born in the same year shares the sign, so it cannot tell two of them apart. In BaZi the Day Master, the stem of the day you were born, is treated as the self, and the full four pillars carry far more personal detail than the year animal.
