CHINESE ASTROLOGY · GENERAL READING

What Chinese Zodiac Am I? Find Your Animal Sign

✦

How the Chinese Zodiac Works

The Chinese zodiac is a 12-year cycle, with each year assigned to one of twelve animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Your zodiac animal is determined by the year you were born — but with an important catch that many Western resources get wrong. Use our [Chinese astrology calculator](/chinese-astrology/calculator) to find your exact animal sign, including your element.

Unlike the Western calendar that begins on January 1, the Chinese zodiac year follows the lunisolar calendar. Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20 each year. If you were born in January or February, you may actually belong to the previous year's animal sign.

Chinese Zodiac Years Quick Reference

### The 12 Animals and Recent Years

**Rat:** 2020, 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960 **Ox:** 2021, 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961 **Tiger:** 2022, 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962 **Rabbit:** 2023, 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963 **Dragon:** 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964 **Snake:** 2025, 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965 **Horse:** 2026, 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966 **Goat:** 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967 **Monkey:** 2028, 2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968 **Rooster:** 2029, 2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969 **Dog:** 2030, 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970 **Pig:** 2031, 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971

### The January-February Exception

If you were born between January 1 and February 20, check the exact Chinese New Year date for your birth year. For example, someone born January 28, 2017 would be a Monkey (2016), not a Rooster (2017), because Chinese New Year 2017 fell on January 28. Our [calculator](/chinese-astrology/calculator) handles this automatically.

The Five Elements Add Depth

Each zodiac year also carries one of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. The element modifies the base animal personality significantly. A Water Dragon (2012) is more intuitive and diplomatic than a Fire Dragon (1976), who is more passionate and commanding.

The 12 animals combined with the 5 elements create a 60-year grand cycle — meaning each exact animal-element combination repeats only once every 60 years. This is why two people born in Dragon years may have very different personalities.

Compatibility Basics

Signs within the same trine are naturally compatible. The classic best matches:

- Rat + Dragon + Monkey - Ox + Snake + Rooster - Tiger + Horse + Dog - Rabbit + Goat + Pig

Opposite signs on the zodiac wheel (six years apart) tend to clash: Rat-Horse, Ox-Goat, Tiger-Monkey, Rabbit-Rooster, Dragon-Dog, Snake-Pig. However, opposites can also create powerful growth when both parties are mature. Dive deeper with our [Chinese zodiac best matches](/answers/chinese-astrology/chinese-zodiac-best-matches) guide.

Beyond the Animal Sign

Your zodiac animal is only the Year Pillar of your Chinese astrology chart. A complete [Four Pillars (BaZi) reading](/answers/chinese-astrology/four-pillars-explained) analyzes the year, month, day, and hour of your birth — revealing a much more nuanced and accurate picture than the animal sign alone.

Two people born in the same zodiac year can have dramatically different destinies based on their month, day, and hour pillars. The animal sign is the front door; the Four Pillars are the entire house.

常見問題

How do I find my Chinese zodiac animal?
Your Chinese zodiac animal is determined by your birth year in the lunisolar calendar. Look up your birth year in a zodiac chart, but if you were born in January or February, check whether your birthday falls before or after Chinese New Year — you may belong to the previous year's animal.
Why are there different Chinese zodiac results for the same year?
The Chinese zodiac follows the lunisolar calendar, not the Western calendar. Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20. People born in early January or February may belong to the previous year's zodiac animal, which is why results can differ depending on the source.
